Description

The River Food Pantry's Munch Truck will be stopping outside Hawthorne on Thursdays from 4:40PM - 5:00PM.

About River Food Pantry & Munch Truck

Launched in 2016, Munch is our mobile meals program that delivers free healthy meals to children and adults in over a dozen low-income neighborhoods throughout Madison. Each meal contains a sandwich or main menu item, a fruit or vegetable, a grain, a treat, and a drink. Everyone is welcome to take home a free meal. No registration or ID is required.

Neighborhoods served by Munch have large populations of children eligible for free school lunch. To bridge the gap that exists when school lunch is not available, Munch operates up to 6 days per week, Monday–Saturday, any time school cafeterias are closed (including breaks and periods of remote learning).

For any questions or comments, please contact the Munch staff at munch@riverfoodpantry.org or (608) 661-1223.

Cap Times Election Coverage Listening Session

Cap Times Election Coverage Listening Session

Community Room
Thursday, May 2, 2024, 5:45pm to 7:45pm

Tired of political reporting that focuses on cheap shots and opinion polls? Would you like election coverage that represents the issues you care about and asks candidates the questions most on your mind?

You can help the Cap Times do exactly that. Cap Times political reporters Andrew Bahl and Erin McGroarty will be at Hawthorne Library on May 2 from 5:45 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.--if you have thoughts about what election coverage should look like, have questions you want answered or would like them to look into a particular issue, swing by and share your thoughts.

Conversations will be informal and centered on what you want to talk about. And, rest assured, while they will report on issues that people bring to their attention, they will not quote anyone in news articles without their expressed consent.

Can’t make those dates but want to give feedback? We also have a confidential online survey where you can let the Cap Times know what is important to you. It’s short, simple and sweet: TAKE THE SURVEY

"Kyoto, Japan, 1948. “Do not question. Do not fight. Do not resist.”

Such is eight-year-old Noriko “Nori” Kamiza’s first lesson. She will not question why her mother abandoned her with only these final words. She will not fight her confinement to the attic of her grandparents’ imperial estate. And she will not resist the scalding chemical baths she receives daily to lighten her skin.

The child of a married Japanese aristocrat and her African American GI lover, Nori is an outsider from birth. Her grandparents take her in, only to conceal her, fearful of a stain on the royal pedigree that they are desperate to uphold in a changing Japan. Obedient to a fault, Nori accepts her solitary life, despite her natural intellect and curiosity. But when chance brings her older half-brother, Akira, to the estate that is his inheritance and destiny, Nori finds in him an unlikely ally with whom she forms a powerful bond—a bond their formidable grandparents cannot allow and that will irrevocably change the lives they were always meant to lead. Because now that Nori has glimpsed a world in which perhaps there is a place for her after all, she is ready to fight to be a part of it—a battle that just might cost her everything." -- Amazon.com
