Indian Horse

Directed by Stephen S. Campanelli.  Performances by Ajuawak Kapashesit, Forrest Goodluck, Martin Donovan, Michiel Huisman, Sladen Peltier.  Elevation Pictures, c2017. Not Rated.  101 minutes.

In the late 1950’s Ontario, eight-year-old Saul Indian Horse is torn from his Ojibway family and committed to one of the notorious Catholic Residential Schools. In this oppressive environment, Saul is denied the freedom to speak his language or embrace his Indigenous heritage while he witnesses horrendous abuse at the hands of the very people entrusted with his care. Despite this, Saul finds salvation in the unlikeliest of places and favourite winter pastime -- hockey. Fascinated by the game, he secretly teaches himself to play, developing a unique and rare skill. He seems to see the game in a way no other player can.

His talent leads him away from the misery of the school, eventually leading him to the Pros. But the ghosts of Saul’s past are always present, and threaten to derail his promising career and future. Forced to confront his painful past, Saul draws on the spirit of his ancestors and the understanding of his friends to begin the process of healing.

About River Food Pantry & Munch Truck

Launched in 2016, Munch is our mobile meals program that delivers free healthy meals to children and adults in over a dozen low-income neighborhoods throughout Madison. Each meal contains a sandwich or main menu item, a fruit or vegetable, a grain, a treat, and a drink. Everyone is welcome to take home a free meal. No registration or ID is required.

Neighborhoods served by Munch have large populations of children eligible for free school lunch. To bridge the gap that exists when school lunch is not available, Munch operates up to 6 days per week, Monday–Saturday, any time school cafeterias are closed (including breaks and periods of remote learning).

For any questions or comments, please contact the Munch staff at munch@riverfoodpantry.org or (608) 661-1223.

Thursday, Apr 4, 2024, 6:30pm to 8:00pm

Join us for a book group discussion. Read a work of your choice by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.  Books are available at the library. New members always welcome!

Gabriel Garcia Marquez was a Colombian novelist, short-story writer, screenwriter, and journalist.  Considered one of the most significant authors of the 20th century, particularly in the Spanish language, he was awarded the 1972 Neustadt International Prize for Literature and the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature.  He is best known for his novels, such as One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967), Chronicle of a Death Foretold (1981), and Love in the Time of Cholera (1985). His works have achieved significant critical acclaim and widespread commercial success, most notably for popularizing a literary style known as magic realism, which uses magical elements and events in otherwise ordinary and realistic situations. Some of his works are set in the fictional village of Macondo (mainly inspired by his birthplace, Aracataca), and most of them explore the theme of solitude. He is the most-translated Spanish-language author. -- [adapted from Wikipedia.org]

Wisconsin Book Festival Presents Terese Allen for The Dane County Farmers' Market Cookbook

Wisconsin Book Festival Presents Terese Allen for The Dane County Farmers' Market Cookbook

Meeting Rooms 301 and 302 Combined
Thursday, Apr 4, 2024, 7:00pm to 8:00pm

For more than 50 years, the nationally renowned Dane County Farmers’ Market in Madison, Wisconsin, has supported farmers and bakers, inspired award-winning chefs, nurtured home cooks, built community, and attracted hordes of tourists and locals who browse up to 150 stalls surrounding the beautiful Wisconsin Capitol building. It is the largest producers-only farmers market in the nation, featuring growers from all corners of the state. Farm-fresh vegetables and fruit, pastured meats, world-class cheeses, luscious baked goods, maple syrup and honey, foraged nuts and mushrooms, and many more seasonal specialties delight the eye and palate.

This cookbook is a gorgeous, warm-hearted salute to all who make the market a community. Build your pantry contents and recipe repertoire with everything from purple daikon radishes and harissa paste to bandaged cheddar and black currants. Prepare both contemporary and heritage dishes such as Hungarian Tomato and Pepper Stew, Tacos de Carnitas, Garlic Scape Feta Pesto Salad, and Red Kabocha Squash Soup with Ginger, Lemongrass, and Thai Eggplant. In addition to some 125 recipes that give a global spin to local ingredients, the book includes a history of the DCFM, a foreword by chef Tory Miller of L’Etoile, and many pages of colorful market photographs.

In conversation with Holly De Ruyter, History Producer for PBS Wisconsin.
