Native Wisconsin Seeds added to Madison Public Library's Seed Library

Madison Public Library’s Seed Library is launching a collection of native Wisconsin plant seeds in November. This spring, Dane County Land & Water Resources Department donated nearly 2,000 native plant seeds collected by Dane County Parks volunteers. There are five species of seeds: black-eyed susan, blue vervain, rattlesnake master, wild bergamot and yellow coneflower. Northside naturalist Alex Singer will be also donating a number of seeds to Lakeview and other Madison seed libraries. You can pick up native seed packets beginning in November at the following locations:

  • Goodman South Madison Library (2222 S. Park St)
  • Lakeview Library (2845 N. Sherman Ave)
  • Meadowridge Library (5726 Raymond Rd)
  • Pinney Library (516 Cottage Grove Rd)

Native Seed Workshops

Native Wisconsin plant seeds are best sown in the fall and left to overwinter. Join Master Naturalist Alex Singer to watch a brief demonstration of making a mini-greenhouse using a plastic gallon jug or other deep plastic container with lid. Please bring your own container if you’d like to try your hand at sowing, and take it home planted with native seeds that will be available for free through our seed library. Tools and soil will be provided, as will some additional native seeds from the presenter's own native yard. Learn how to prepare your native seeds during these hands-on workshops for Sowing Native Seeds Over Winter:
