Punch Needle Rug Making with Hijinx Mixed Media

Punch Needle Rug Making with Hijinx Mixed Media

Wednesday, Feb 7, 2024, 6:00pm to 8:00pm

Rugs for Your Mugs! A Rug Making Workshop

Join Juliet King of Hijinx Mixed Media to make your own one-of-a-kind rug coaster! This workshop will explore Juliet’s favorite form of fiber art–punch needle rug tufting. Juliet will provide background information and a demonstration of rug hand-punching method.  Each participant will have a prepared kit to work from with experienced artist Juliet King. Using the yarn, colors, and design provided, the goal is for each participant to come away from this workshop with experience in rug making with a punch method.  You may choose to use the supplies from your kit to create a simple design or bring your own yarn for more variety.  Embroidery hoops and needles will be available to use during the workshop.

Things to consider when rug-making for you to think about in preparation and will be discussed at the workshop:
● Text is difficult, especially with small rugs
● Big & bold graphics work best
● Intricate detail will likely get lost
● Consider what kind of yarn is best for each project
● Is your rug for touching or just for looking?

This 2-hour workshop is ideal for intermediate to advanced crafters and is open to ages 16+.

Space is limited and registration is required. Please refrain from registering a second time if you attended previously - all January-March workshops are the same content. Registration opens 2 weeks in advance (Jan. 24, 2024).

About the instructor:

Juliet (she/they) founded Hijinx Mixed Media as a way to spread joy and laughter through art. "Sometimes my art is humorous just for a laugh, but sometimes it's humorous as a way to take the edge off harder-to-talk-about subjects such as depression, racism, and body positivity. Navigating through the world as a mixed race queer person, I hope to encourage community, solidarity, and resistance through accessible imagery and loud messages."  Learn more about Juliet's art on her website / IG & TikTok @hijinx.mixed

Open Studio with Artist-in-Residence Grace Olson

Open Studio with Artist-in-Residence Grace Olson

Wednesday, Feb 7, 2024, 6:00pm to 8:00pm

Weekly Open Studios is a part of Family Reunion, the Bubbler Room Artist-in-Residence (Feb-May) with Grace Olson.
Grace will be present every Wednesday evening 6-8pm, leading creative, hands-on activities and collaborative projects to anyone who stops by.

Family Reunion is a space for reimagination and celebration of family in all the forms it can take. In this space, you are invited to take part in creative projects that explore the ways we all find, make, experience, and practice family. Grace's intention as a facilitator is to shed light on the unconventional and to encourage change toward more intentionality and interdependence. The wishing, making, tinkering, and pondering we do together will explore questions such as:

  • Who is in your lineage?
  • What stories/skills/heirlooms/artifacts/ways of being/ways of thinking do you wish to bring forward?
  • Where do you find a sense of home?
  • When does one “start a family”, and what does that mean?
  • How can we move towards building more loving and resilient family structures?

The Bubbler Room is open to the public whenever the Central Library is open. It is closed to the public only temporarily for any scheduled workshops and/or community partner site visits.
