Third Thursday Book Discussion: Calling for a Blanket Dance
Thursday, Nov 16, 2:00pm to 3:00pm
Join us for a discussion of this month's book: Calling for a Blanket Dance by Oscar Hokeah. New members always welcome! Copies may be available at the Ask Desk.
Synopsis: Told in a series of voices, Calling for a Blanket Dance takes us into the life of Ever Geimausaddle through the multigenerational perspectives of his family as they soldier through a myriad of difficulties: his father's sudden kidney failure and subsequent disability, his mother's struggle to hold on to her job and care for her husband, the constant resettlement of the family, and Ever's own bottled-up rage at the instability all around him. Meanwhile, all of Ever's relatives have ideas about who he is and who he should be. His Cherokee grandmother urges the family to move across the state to find security; his dying grandfather hopes to reunite him with his heritage through traditional gourd dances; his Kiowa cousin reminds him that he's connected to an ancestral past. And once an adult, Ever must take the strength given to him by his relatives to save not only himself, but also the next generation of family.
How will this young man visualize a place for himself when the world hasn't given him a place to start with? Honest, heartbreaking, and ultimately uplifting, Calling for a Blanket Dance is the story of how Ever Geimausaddle found his way to home.

Open Studio with Artist-in-Residence Maria Schirmer Devitt
Thursday, Nov 16, 5:30pm to 7:30pm
All are welcome to join Maria and create a space for wishing within the Bubbler Room. Each week, Maria will be in the Bubbler Room on Thursday evenings, hosting sessions to create enchanting art together. We will explore the magic that exists in the natural world, our community, and in ourselves. We will focus on combining words and images using printmaking, collage, and sculpture. We’ll delve into questions such as:
What are we wishing for (something we’ve never had or something we’ve lost or…)?
What does it take for our wishes to come true?
Who or what grants them?
What kind of collective magic can we summon?
What offerings do we leave in return as we make our wish?
What rituals do we create around making wishes?
All ages and abilities are welcome! Drop in, no registration required.
When we wish, we wish for something just out of our reach of what seems possible. What would it take to bring it to make them come true?

Mystery Book Group Discussion of "The Woman in the Library" by Sulari Gentill
Thursday, Nov 16, 5:30pm to 7:00pm
Join us for a mystery book group discussion of "The Woman in the Library" by Sulari Gentill. Books are available at the library. New members always welcome!
"Ned Kelly award winning author Sulari Gentill sets this mystery-within-a-mystery in motion with a deceptively simple, Dear Hannah, What are you writing? pulling us into theornate reading room at the Boston Public Library.
In every person's story, there is something to hide...
The tranquility is shattered by a woman's terrified scream. Security guards take charge immediately, instructing everyone inside to stay put until the threat is identified and contained. While they wait for the all-clear, four strangers, who'd happened to sit at the same table, pass the time in conversation and friendships are struck. Each has his or her own reasons for being in the reading room that morning―it just happens that one is a murderer.
Sulari Gentill delivers a sharply thrilling read with The Woman in the Library, an unexpectedly twisty literary adventure that examines the complicated nature of friendship and shows us that words can be the most treacherous weapons of all." -- Amazon.com
