Aging with Awareness

Aging with Awareness

Meeting Rooms A and B Combined
Thursday, May 18, 9:30am to 10:15am

Is this group for you? Are you over the age of 50? Do you want to increase your awareness of the natural process of aging, and feel more open hearted and happier?

To be aware simply means to know. Even though knowing (awareness) is always available to us, we often get lost. Most often we are too caught up in our thoughts, thinking about the past, planning for the future, and moving quickly through the present moment. Getting lost is simply a habit of mind.

Join facilitator Vicki Goodman-Strenski in practicing awareness. Vicki has worked with humans of all ages over the past thirty years, supporting their curiosity and their willingness to be more accepting and less anxious. As we all know, aging is not for the feint of heart!

Attend all three sessions to explore three different aspects of awareness, or come when you can.

Third Thursday Book Discussion: The Personal Librarian

Third Thursday Book Discussion: The Personal Librarian

Meeting Rooms A and B Combined
Thursday, May 18, 2:00pm to 3:00pm

Join us for a discussion of this month's book: The Personal Librarian by Marie Benedict and V. C. Murray. New members are always welcome! Copies may be available at the Ask Desk.

Synopsis: In her twenties, Belle da Costa Greene is hired by J. P. Morgan to curate a collection of rare manuscripts, books, and artwork for his newly built Pierpont Morgan Library. Belle becomes a fixture on the New York society scene and one of the most powerful people in the art and book world, known for her impeccable taste and shrewd negotiating for critical works as she helps build a world-class collection.

But Belle has a secret, one she must protect at all costs. She was born not Belle da Costa Greene but Belle Marion Greener. She is the daughter of Richard Greener, the first Black graduate of Harvard and a well-known advocate for equality. Belle's complexion isn't dark because of her alleged Portuguese heritage that lets her pass as white—her complexion is dark because she is African American.

The Personal Librarian tells the story of an extraordinary woman, famous for her intellect, style, and wit, and shares the lengths to which she must go—for the protection of her family and her legacy—to preserve her carefully crafted white identity in the racist world in which she lives.

Thursday, May 18, 4:00pm to 5:00pm

Stop by Meadowridge Library to meet with a representative from Operation Fresh Start.

Since 1970, Operation Fresh Start has empowered more than 8,000 emerging adults to find a pathway to a family-sustaining career.

OFS programs are designed for a critical time in life: the transition to adulthood. They provide a path forward for emerging adults through mentoring, education, and employment training. OFS graduates earn their high school diploma, driver’s license, certifications in the construction and conservation fields, and gain college/career readiness skills. Participants are also giving back to the community — building affordable homes for low-income families, completing conservation projects and environmental justice work in city and county parks. After program completion, OFS staff continue to support graduates as they transition into post-secondary education and/or self-sustaining employment.

"Nell Young’s whole life and greatest passion is cartography. Her father, Dr. Daniel Young, is a legend in the field and Nell’s personal hero. But she hasn’t seen or spoken to him ever since he cruelly fired her and destroyed her reputation after an argument over an old, cheap gas station highway map.

But when Dr. Young is found dead in his office at the New York Public Library, with the very same seemingly worthless map hidden in his desk, Nell can’t resist investigating. To her surprise, she soon discovers that the map is incredibly valuable and exceedingly rare. In fact, she may now have the only copy left in existence...because a mysterious collector has been hunting down and destroying every last one—along with anyone who gets in the way.

But why?

To answer that question, Nell embarks on a dangerous journey to reveal a dark family secret and discovers the true power that lies in maps..." -- Amazon.com
