Madison Public Library is honored to partner with the City of Madison Clerk's Office once again to provide a location for voter registration, in-person absentee voting, and election day voting in 2026. We will be updating this page as information changes and in-person absentee voting dates are set. Always check the City Clerk's website and social media for the most up-to-date information.

Please note that libraries can not answer many voting questions. Please call the City Clerk's office at 608-266-4601 with questions related to voting and the election.


National Voter Registration Day

In honor of National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday, September 16, Madison Public Library is partnering with the City of Madison Clerk's Office to host a week of voter registration drives in our libraries. 

Stop into your local library to learn more about voting, check your voter registration status, or sign up to become a poll worker! Volunteers and clerk office staff will be on-site to answer questions and share information from 12-3pm each day at the following locations:

No registration required. These are drop-in events. 

 

Remember, when you register, you must prove your current name at your current address. You cannot register to vote at a post office box, and it takes 28 days to establish residency at a new address. Visit the Clerk's Office website to see what counts as acceptable forms of proof of address.

Election Day

Voting is available at select library locations on November 3, 2020. Libraries where voting is taking place will be closed for in-person services

The next election is scheduled for Tuesday, April 7, 2026. You MUST VOTE AT YOUR POLLING LOCATION on election day, and note that polling places may have changed since the last election. Find your polling place 

Polling places will be open from 7 a.m. - 8 p.m. on Election day. If you are in line to vote at 8 p.m., you will be allowed to cast your ballot. At locations serving as polling places on election day, Madisonians can register to vote, return absentee ballots and vote in person. See what's on your ballot and confirm your polling place on myvote.wi.gov.

In-Person Absentee Voting

Dates will be announced in the spring for In-Person Absentee Voting in the City of Madison and at Madison Public Library. 

People can register to vote ON SITE when voting absentee in-person. Voters who need to register due to a recent move or name change will also need to show an acceptable proof of address document. Voter registration is not allowed the three days before an election.

You can register to vote at In Person Absentee Voting sites with City Clerk officials leading up to and on Election Day except for during the three days prior to Election Day (next election: Tuesday, April 7, 2026). You can also register to vote online, at the Clerk's office, and at the library throughout the year with certain exceptions.

Absentee Ballot Return

Below are the ways you can return your absentee ballot to libraries:

  • You can return your absentee ballot to city clerk staff during the hours of in-person absentee voting. Voters will not be able to drop off their absentee ballots at the library outside of in-person absentee hours.
  • Voters can return absentee ballots to Ballot Drop Boxes available around the city until 5 p.m. the day before the election.
  • On election day, you must return your absentee ballot to your polling place. If the library is your polling place, clerk staff will accept absentee ballots on election day from 7 a.m. - 8 p.m. You can look up your polling place online.

Note: dates will be updated as they become available. Here's a list of key dates to be aware of during the 2026 Spring Election: 

  •  In-Person Absentee Voting Begins.
  • Mail It Back Monday. Voters returning absentees via mail should do so by today.
  • Absentee via Mail Request Deadline for most voters, but Post Office might not deliver by Tuesday.
  • Final In-Person Voter Registration at Absentee Sites. Voters may still register at the polls on Election Day.
  • Final Day of In-Person Absentee Voting
  • April 7, 2026: Election Day. Polls open 7 a.m. and remain open until 8 p.m. Election results are posted on County Clerk’s website.
  • Provisional Deadline. Provisional voters have until 4 p.m. to get a copy of their ID to the Clerk’s Office.
