Learn more about the 2025 Naturalist-in-Residence: Andrea Debbink!

Andrea Debbink is a writer and nature lover who has called Madison home for more than two decades. After getting her start in publishing as a magazine editor, she now writes books for children and adults—seventeen and counting—including If the Rivers Run FreeThrive Where You’re Planted, and the Wild World Handbook series. Her newest book is a Madison-area hiking guide called Urban Trails: Madison. Although Andrea writes in different genres and formats—from picture books to middle-grade to adult nonfiction—her books nearly always include her favorite themes: nature exploration and environmental stewardship.

As a suburban naturalist, Andrea sees flowers where others see weeds and wildlife neighbors where others may see pests. Her upbringing in the Minneapolis suburbs taught her to seek out nature in unexpected places and appreciate the ordinary wonders that thrive among our streets and shopping centers. Her more recent training as a Wisconsin Master Naturalist and her years spent hiking and paddling throughout the Madison area have fueled Andrea’s enthusiasm for connecting people to nature in our community, especially the parts of it that are underappreciated or overlooked.

Announcing the new LGBTQ+ Wellness Guide

Each year Madison Public Library celebrates Pride month in June with events, books, resources and more. However, we also have LGBTQ+ events happening year-round. This year we're especially excited to debut an ongoing resource, a new 2024 edition of the Madison Public Library LGBTQ+ Wellness Guide

Madison Public Library welcomes and supports the LGBTQ+ community and understands that the fight for LGBTQ+ equity in America is far from over, especially for transgender people and queer people of color. Included in this guide are mental health providers, transition and sexual health resources, support groups, hotlines, and more. We hope this guide informs and empowers you to find the community and support that you need.

We're in the process of getting the guide printed and out in all of our libraries, as well as clinics around the city. Keep an eye on our Wellness Guide page to see the list of clinics the guide will be available at as well as a link to download a digital copy.

The power of bridging: how to build a world where we all belong

John
Powell
A research-backed guide for building bridges across difference in any area of our lives from an esteemed civil rights scholar"--Provided by publisher. We don't want to live in a society in turmoil. In fact, 93 percent of people in the US want to reduce divisiveness, and 86 percent believe it's possible to disagree in a healthy way. Yet with increasing political and social fragmentation, many of us don't know how to move past our differences. Civil rights scholar john a. powell presents an actionable path through "bridging" that helps us communicate, coexist, and imagine a new story for our shared future where we all belong. With inimitable warmth and vision, powell offers a framework for building cohesion and solidarity between disparate beliefs and backgrounds. Bridging is more than a discrete list of actions to follow -- it's a mindset we can develop to help us foster belonging and connection. Throughout the book, powell shares personal reflections as well as practices to help you begin bridging wherever you are -- in your community, friendships, family, workplace -- even with those whom you might never have imagined you could find common ground. "Bridging is a salve for our fractured world," powell says. "We can overcome the illusion of separateness by honoring our differences, transcending the notion that difference divides us, and instead cocreate a world where everyone belongs.
