If you missed this morning's lunar eclipse, I've got just the thing for you - and it doesn't require being up at 2 am or special glasses. He Said/She Said by Erin Kelly is more than just a mystery novel: it stars a pair of eclipse chasers!
Kit and Laura have been together through thick and thin - though at the beginning of the book, we don't know just what that means. They've been together for years, and Laura is finally pregnant after years of struggling with infertility. Things are good... until Kit leaves Laura at home to indulge his passion, traveling the Faroe Islands to see the totality of a solar eclipse. While the two are separated, we see how the past haunts them. During another solar eclipse 15 years earlier, Kit and Laura witnessed a brutal crime, and the aftermath of that crime will affect them forever.
The story is told in chapters that alternate between Kit's and Laura's perspectives and between the past and the present, slowly revealing just what actually happened all those years ago. It's a slow burn of a thriller, and an excellent way to get your eclipse fix while we wait for the next American eclipse in 2024. Kit, and Laura to an extent, are true eclipse fanatics, and Kelly does an excellent job of writing about the phenomena, so that you can almost image being there and seeing it yourself. The book is also a fascinating study of how trauma affects people and relationships - and it's just a great read. If you're a fan of British mysteries like those of Paula Hawkins, Holly Seddon, and Sophie Hannah, you won't be disappointed by Erin Kelly.
