Watch out for the gooseberry pie

A review of Miss Butterworth and the Mad Baron: A Graphic Novel by Julia Quinn

This graphic novel companion to the Bridgerton series is an absolute delight - candy for the mind and soul. I don't mean that in the empty calories and high fructose corn syrup way. I mean that in the irresistible way that fresh saltwater taffy, or homemade fudge, or hand dipped chocolate candy overwhelms the senses, and for me, is perfection. Sweet as honey combined with buttery brickle. I could go on and on, but you get the idea.

Bad luck plagues Miss Butterworth. Her family falls to pieces after almost everyone dies from the pox. Miss Butterworth, her mother, and grandmother manage to eke out a living and then lose it all due to more back luck. Eventually, Miss Butterworth is sent to live with distant relatives who are not kind to her and not willing to treat her like family. Determined to make her own way in the world and live on her own terms, Miss Butterworth finds work as a lady's companion and enters the world of the "mad" baron where she finds herself in the middle of more drama, high adventure and escapades than any swashbuckler of the day.

Wickedly funny and smart with nods to traditional historical romance, this book is just the best, most fun thing to read. It's no wonder the characters of Bridgerton are enthralled.
