Rachel Gillig hit big on BookTok with her The Shepherd King books, so there has been much anticipatory buzz about this first in a new duology, The Knight and the Moth, and whether it can live up to the first. I think I can safely say that fans will be more than satisfied (said in my best "my cousin Vinny" voice).

Sybil was brought to the Aisling Cathedral years ago to become a Diviner and is now known solely by a number, Six. Diviners drown, repeatedly, in order to read the Omens from the gods her people worship. Six and her fellow Diviners have been promised a life of freedom after ten years of service and as their anniversary approaches 6 is asked to provide a reading for the King and his retinue. After doing so, the Diviners sneak out to a nearby village with some of the King's knights. Among the knights is Rodrick Myndacious, who seems to have nothing but contempt for the cathedral and its denizens. But after their night of fun ends Six realizes something is very wrong. One by one, her fellow Diviners are disappearing and she is determined to find out what happened to them. She escapes the grounds and goes on a quest with the King, Rodrick, and an often-confused gargoyle.

Gillig's world-building is top-notch and her characters leap off the page. This is a darkly lush tale and I enjoyed every minute of it. If you enjoyed the Shepherd King books, you'll love this.
