Madison Public Library is participating in the Latine Music & Dance Festival hosted by Beyond the Page from April - June, 2024 in Dane County Libraries. The festival is a celebration of Latine music and dance and will feature artists from Colombia, Peru and Mexico.

Latine Music Journey for Kids | Viaje de música latina para niños
Angela Puerta brings a distinctive blend of entertainment and education to young audiences, incorporating small instruments that kids can borrow and play along with during the show. The interactive experience not only keeps them engaged but also fosters a love for music in both English and Spanish. Wearing a special dress, she takes children on a cultural journey, explaining the vibrant world of traditional Colombian music, including dance styles like cumbia, as well as other lively Latin rhythms such as salsa and merengue. It's not just a show; it's an opportunity for kids to immerse themselves in a different culture. She encourages children to join in, sing along, and even learn some basic Spanish words in a fun and interactive way.
Angela Puerta ofrece una combinación distintiva de entretenimiento y educación para el público joven, incorporando pequeños instrumentos que los niños pueden tomar prestados y tocar durante el espectáculo. La experiencia interactiva no sólo los mantiene interesados sino que también fomenta el amor por la música tanto en inglés como en español. Con un vestido especial, lleva a los niños a un viaje cultural, explicándoles el vibrante mundo de la música tradicional colombiana, incluidos estilos de baile como la cumbia, así como otros animados ritmos latinos como la salsa y el merengue. No es sólo un espectáculo; es una oportunidad para que los niños se sumerjan en una cultura diferente. Latine Dance Passport | Pasaporte de baile latino
Immerse yourself in the heartbeat of Latine cultures around the world with dancer, dance instructor and musician Luis Armacanqui. Each session will focus on a specific genre of dance, its associated music, national origins, and cultural significance. After a brief presentation to learn about the dance, get on your feet for solo and partner dance instruction set to live music. Our goal is to have participants learn and appreciate what makes each Latin dance a unique life skill that can be enjoyed anywhere!
This program will be presented in English, but the presenter speaks Spanish and can field questions in both languages. No experience or partner needed. Just show up and dance with us!

Angela Puerta
Angela Puerta is a six-time MAMA award winner and Best of Madison 2019 and 2020 Latin Artist bronze and silver star. She is a Colombian singer-songwriter and guitarist based in Madison, Wisconsin. Angela defines her music as eclectic since it is a reflection of the different cultures she has been exposed to including her home country, Colombia; Australia, where she lived for two years; and the United States, the place she now calls home. Her main music influence is Alternative Rock, Rock en Español, Pop, Reggae, Colombian folklore and other Latin American rhythms. She will be presenting both kids/family programs as well as adult programs at the library!
Angela Puerta es seis veces ganadora del premio MAMA y estrella de bronce y plata Best of Madison 2019 y Latin Artist 2020. Es una cantautora y guitarrista colombiana radicada en Madison, Wisconsin. Angela define su música como ecléctica ya que es un reflejo de las diferentes culturas a las que ha estado expuesta incluyendo su país de origen, Colombia; Australia, donde vivió dos años; y Estados Unidos, el lugar que ahora considera su hogar. Su principal influencia musical es el Rock Alternativo, Rock en Español, Pop, Reggae, folklore colombiano y otros ritmos latinoamericanos. ¡Ella presentará programas para niños y familias, así como programas para adultos en las bibliotecas!
Luis Armacanqui
A native of Lima, Perú, Luis Armacanqui was born and raised around the sounds of Afro-Latin music for as long as he can remember. However, it was in 2011 that he embarked on immersive and constant trips around the world to gain a wealth of knowledge in the areas of musicology and dance technique. Luis’ philosophy is to combine the history and mechanics of Latin music in order to establish a strong foundation in the accompanying partner dances. Locally, Luis has developed a thriving community through The Capitol Social, providing safe spaces for all to enjoy the culture of Latin dance and music.
Originario de Lima, Perú, Luis Armacanqui nació y creció alrededor de los sonidos de la música afrolatina desde que tiene memoria. Sin embargo, fue en 2011 que se embarcó en viajes inmersivos y constantes alrededor del mundo para adquirir un cúmulo de conocimientos en las áreas de musicología y técnica de danza. La filosofía de Luis es combinar la historia y la mecánica de la música latina para establecer una base sólida en los bailes en pareja que lo acompañan. A nivel local, Luis ha desarrollado una comunidad próspera a través de The Capitol Social, brindando espacios seguros para que todos disfruten de la cultura del baile y la música latina.
