We’ve begun to notice a pattern in publishing lately. Graphic novels for elementary age kids that feature characters with punny food names (or even characters who ARE food). Perhaps the next series will be about Cheese (a mouse), Burr (a porcupine) and Grrr (a bear)? Turns out, most of those books are pretty great, so here’s a round-up of Food & Friends for you to enjoy!
An unlikely trio of friends, a bluejay, a bumblebee and… a tiny green pea. What adventures can they possibly enjoy together? So far there are 4 volumes, so apparently a lot!
Blue is a worm, Barry is a frog and Pancakes is a large… rabbit? They all live together in a tree house and care deeply for each other.
Peanut and Crackers and dogs, Butter is a cat. The arrival of a rowdy puppy, Peanut, disrupts Crackers’ and Butter’s formerly calm home.
Unlike the other books, only two of the main characters in this series have food names (Baloney the pig and Peanut the horse are friends with Bizz the bee and Krabbit the grouchy, well, you can probably guess what kind of animal Krabbit is.). These books are lots of fun and filled with mini-stories to give beginning readers a greater sense of accomplishment at smaller intervals throughout the book.
Waffles and Pancake are sibling kitties. In the first book they go to a science museum with their Cat Dad. Looking forward to more stories about these two!
This series stars a loveable pair of friends who are a hot dog and a chicken nugget– not to be confused with Bean Dog & Nugget, which is a totally different series, written by Cherise Mericle Harper and starring a loveable pair of friends who are a hot dog and a chicken nugget. Not the same at all. Nope.
Two very girly cupcakes named Sprinkles and Swirls enjoy a day at an amusement park. How did they escape the bakery? Will anyone want to eat them after they feel sick after the dizzying rides? You’ll just have to read the book to find out.
Another unlikely friendship, this one between a rabbit and a sugary treat. You might need to grab a box of chocolates to eat with this one. Although that might make you feel a little sad for the chocolates.
Cookie and Broccoli are exactly what they sound like and live in a world full of talking and walking food items. There are no people in this book at all which makes you wonder…. Did the food eat all the people?
A slice of pizza and a talking taco star in this series about everyone’s two favorite foods. Who wouldn’t love that?
