Introducing our newest Artist-in-Residence, Juliette Walker! During her residency Light As Material Project (L.A.M.P.), Juliette will host open studio hours and workshops for folks of all ages to play with clay, draw lamps, and read and explore ideas of lamps and lights throughout July and August.
Light As Material Project (L.A.M.P.) is ceramic artist Juliette Walker’s ongoing exploration of the objects or things we use to bring light into interior spaces, both for utility and aesthetic value. In her own practice, she makes functional lamps, light sculptures, and installations out of ceramics.
She looks forward to continuing this exploration of using ceramics as a tool for carrying or playing with light via collaborative lantern-making workshops, cyanotypes and clay workshops, and other investigations related to lamps, light, and ceramics during her Bubbler residency.

All workshops take place in the Bubbler Room at Central Library. Max 10 participants per workshop; all ages; no previous experience necessary
Participants will have the chance to play with natural light by harnessing the sun to make cyanotype prints. Adding in the flexibility and playfulness of clay, we will make shapes, letters, and other forms from clay to make designs with the cyanotype print. Kiddos should be accompanied by an adult.
Be a Part of the Zine
All are invited to participate in the Light as Material Project (L.A.M.P.) Zine with Juliette Walker from now through August!
Draw, write, scribble, or doodle to answer two prompts from the artist:
- Where do you find light or lightness in your life?
- Draw and describe your favorite lamp - what's the story of it?
Folks can find materials in the Bubbler at Central Library and in your neighborhood library - or you're welcome to complete the prompts at home!
Just be sure to tag the library and the artist in your responses if you post them to social media: @light_as_material_project (Instagram) @madisonpubliclibrary (Instagram), @madisonpubliclibrary (Facebook).
These responses will be added to a collaborative zine with many others created by Juliette Walker!
