Read Like a Badger Team Summer Reading Club

Why Summer Reading?

When children don't read over the summer, they lose some of the hard-earned skill they acquired during the school year (the average student will lose up to one month, with disadvantaged students losing closer to two). This skill loss, often called the summer slide or summer learning loss, is devastating, leaving some children two full years behind their peers by high school.

What Is Team Summer Reading Club?

The Read Like a Badger Team Summer Reading Club is designed for childcare, summer school, or other group settings that serve children ages 3 - 12 for an extended period over the summer. The club will support caregivers and staff who work with groups of children as they encourage reading in their programs.

Great, I'll sign my group up at the bottom of this page! Then what happens?

A Youth Services Librarian from the Madison Public Library will contact you to set up a time to visit your site. As part of the Read Like a Badger Team Summer Reading Club your group will receive:

  • A brand new paperback book of their choice for each of the children in your program!

  • A packet of information for program staff on how to better encourage students to read throughout the summer. Beef up the literacy portion of your summer program using these tips with your staff!
  • An additional scheduled visit from a Librarian to share stories or provide other literacy activities to your group. Ask us about staff trainings around literacy topics such as reading motivation techniques for reluctant readers!

Groups are also welcome to attend events at any Madison Public Library location. Please contact the Librarian at each library location to discuss space availability for each event you'd like to attend. A complete listing of Library events can be found here.
