Used Book Sale to Support Friends of Madison Public Library

Come enjoy a sale of gently used and donated books, CDs, audiobooks, and higher priced specialty books during the Wisconsin Book Festival from October 17-20! All proceeds go to support Madison Public Library.

Prices include: 

  • $2 Hardcover
  • $1 Paperback
  • $1 Children's hardcover and Children's DVDs
  • $2 Feature DVDs
  • $1 CDS and Audiobooks on CD
  • $.50 Children's paperbacks
  • Higher priced treasures

The sale will take place on the first floor of Central Library outside of the Friends of the Madison Public Library Book Store! Friends can accept cash, check or credit cards. 

About the Friends Bookstore: 

The bookstore is volunteer-run and open at the same hours as Central Library. Thanks to the proceeds from the bookstore and Friends’ membership dues, the Friends of Madison Public Library (at Central Library) have funded the following: a $100,000 pledge to the Central Library, the Library's Beyond the Page Program, a portion of the Library's Summer Reading Program (WE READ), audiobook collection sponsorship, the New York Times and Wisconsin State Journal subscriptions, and a portion of the Naturalist-in-Residence program. For people interested in a wide variety of role-playing games, including traditional role-playing games such as Original D&D, 1st Edition AD&D, Classic Traveller, Pendragon, and Call of Cthulhu, as well as retro-clones like Old School Essentials, Labyrinth Lord, Swords & Wizardry, and others.

We also play more contemporary RPGs such as Savage Worlds and GURPS, as well as games like Beyond the Wall, Torchbearer, Powered By The Apocalypse and FATE.

If you played any of these games in the past, or are COMPLETELY NEW to them, we're happy to have you come and play. 

Meets every third Saturday at Hawthorne Library.

Intermediate Students: Practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing English with the Literacy Network.

Fall 2024 classes are September 21 - December 14, Saturdays, 10 am - 12 pm (no class November 30), in-person at Goodman South, Madison Public Library. This class is free for students 18 years old and up living permanently in Dane County. A class for beginner students will be held at Literacy Network at the same time.

Care & Repair: Getting Started with Drills

So many home repair projects begin and end with one easy-to-use, yet intimidating power tool - the drill. Demystify drills and drivers in this beginner class where you’ll learn the basic functions for both drilling holes and inserting or removing hardware, along with best practices for using both drills and drivers. You’ll walk away being able to easily locate studs, hang picture frames, fix railings, and make any number of countless other simple home repairs that rely on the humble drill!

This class is recommended for adults. Registration is required and opens two weeks prior to the event on October 5, 2024

About the artist: Sylvie Rosenthal received a BFA from RIT’s School for American Crafts in Woodworking, and received a MFA in sculpture from the UW-Madison. She owns and operates Lower Astronomy Studios, a woodworking, design, and sculpture studio in Madison. Sylvie teaches woodworking and design thinking in many settings, nationally at university, college programs, and craft schools, and in the local community with Madison Public Library. There’s a lot to do in the garden in fall! A number of jobs can be done in fall to save you time and headaches in spring. Learn about a variety of tasks that will help you put the garden and lawn to bed so they are in good shape and ready to go in spring. A checklist of things to do for the lawn, vegetable garden, woody plants, perennial and annual flower beds, as well as fall tool care will be presented. All are welcome; no reservations are required.

About the presenter

Speakers for this program are Dane County Extension Horticulture Volunteers who serve their community through activities and educational presentations on a broad range of horticultural subjects.

Join us for Saturday Jazz! This month, we welcome Les Cordes en Blue.

Les Cordes en Blue is a Madison based acoustic string jazz trio. Our repertoire includes music inspired by the legendary Django Reinhardt as well as bebop, jazz standards, French jazz/pop, and contemporary inspired novelties. We want our music to have you tapping your feet, feeling the groove, and maybe even dancing!

Jazz at Sequoya features local musicians on the third Saturday of every month. The series is generously funded by the Friends of Sequoya Library.
