Join artist Amy Mietzel for hands-on art activities inspired by picture books! We'll start by doing a read-aloud of the book - then create art using unique materials and fun supplies. Additional books that fit the theme will also be available for caregivers and youth to read together and check-out. For ages 2-5. Siblings & groups welcome.

Play Minecraft in both creative and survival worlds! Ability to fully use both a computer keyboard and a computer mouse required. Recommended for ages 8 and up.

Kids are invited to join us for a fun STEM program focusing on robotics and coding. This week we will be coding with Scratch!

Kids of all ages are welcome to join, but kids ages 7 and under will require the assistance of an adult. No registration required.

Gathers most Thursday evenings! Middle and high school students can meet other aspiring authors, bounce ideas off one another, share their stories, and feel the creativity flow! Writing club is led by local author Carole Madrzak.

Rugs for Your Mugs! A Rug Making Workshop

Join Juliet King of Hijinx Mixed Media to make your own one-of-a-kind rug coaster! This workshop will explore Juliet’s favorite form of fiber art–punch needle rug tufting. Juliet will provide background information and a demonstration of rug hand-punching method.  Each participant will have a selection of yarns to work from with experienced artist Juliet King. Using the yarn, colors, and design provided, the goal is for each participant to come away from this workshop with experience in rug making with a punch method.  You may choose to use a simple design provided or bring your own for more variety.  Embroidery hoops and needles will be available to use during the workshop. 

Things to consider when rug-making for you to think about in preparation and will be discussed at the workshop:
● Text is difficult, especially with small rugs
● Big & bold graphics work best
● Intricate detail will likely get lost
● Consider what kind of yarn is best for each project
● Is your rug for touching or just for looking?

This 2-hour workshop is ideal for intermediate to advanced crafters and is open to ages 16+.

Space is limited and registration is required. Both October workshops are the same content; please select just one to register for. Registration opens 2 weeks in advance (Oct 3, 2024).

About the instructor:

Juliet (she/they) founded Hijinx Mixed Media as a way to spread joy and laughter through art. Using humor, my art aims to accessibly explore difficult topics like humanity's impact on the planet, loneliness and community, or reminders of death (memento mori). Join us every third Thursday, 6:30-8:30pm to play board games!

There will be a mix of longer-play games (Settlers of Catan, Betrayal at House on the Hill, etc) and some shorter games (Code Names, Exploding Kittens, Yahtzee, and more!)

Snacks will be provided, no registration needed!

This year marks the 100 year anniversary of the Indian Citizenship Act. Join Torey Dolan, William H. Hastie Fellow at the University of Wisconsin Law School, for a reflection on the past 100 years of Indian citizenship and the role that Native Americans play as voters, candidates, and organizers in our modern political landscape. This talk will cover the good, the bad, the different, and the triumphant stories of Native people with varying approaches to citizenship - from rejection to incorporation.

About the presenter: Torey Dolan (Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma) is a William H. Hastie Fellow at the University of Wisconsin Law School. Her scholarship focuses on Tribal Nations, Democracy, and American Indian self-determination and political actualization in the intersections of Federal Indian Law and Election Law. Prior to receiving the Hastie Fellowship, Dolan was a Native Vote Fellow with the Arizona State University Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law Indian Legal Clinic where she helped lead the Arizona Native Vote Election Protection Project through the 2020 and 2022 election cycles. She has assisted in litigation on matters pertaining to Tribal sovereignty, the Voting Rights Act, and state election law before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, the Federal District Court of Arizona, and the Superior Court of Apache and Pinal Counties in Arizona.
