Felting Activity for Kids: Wool Blending and Bead Making

You may be familiar with blending paint to make new colors, but you can do the same with wool fiber. Stop by the Sequoya Library kids area to learn how to make any color in the rainbow starting with red, yellow and blue wool. Add water and some hand rolling to make a felt bead to take home. All supplies are provided. This drop in activity is perfect for youngsters and available to kids of all ages though kids under seven will need an adult helper.

This activity coincides with the Artful Felt at the Library exhibit by the Madison Area Felters’ Guild, April 5 to May 30. Artful Felt at the Library is made possible with support of the Friends of Sequoya.

2 day Legacy Box Workshop - day 2

Legacy Boxes offer a way to commemorate a special family member or event. Legacy Boxes are handmade, unique to each workshop attendee, and can be folded to sit on a shelf or display as a triptych. Attendees should bring small item/s and photo/s to add into the box; the dimension inside the box are about 1”.  Bring an open mind, flexibility and an idea of a person, project, or memory you would like to honor in your legacy box.

This is a 2 day workshop (5/12 & 5/13) and registrants must commit to attend the entire 4 hour sessions on both days. Register via the listing for day 1. Breaks will be included; bring your own snacks and beverages.

Space is very limited and registration opens two weeks before the first date. If registration is full, a brief waiting list will be kept for any cancellations. Call 608-224-7100 for more information.

Instructor Bio:

Angela Johnson is a professional artist, creativity coach and educator based in Wisconsin. She earned a master’s in Art Education, an MA in Art and an MFA with a focus in photography from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. https://angelajohnsonartist.com/

She works between photography, bookmaking and box making. Her work includes themes of nature, balance, and telling stories through individual and collective memories. She often incorporates scientific elements and concepts into her work. Collaborations with other artists and scientists energizes her creativity. 

Angela is the Madison Public Library, Pinney Studio Creativity Coach for 2023.

Join local woodworker Sylvie Rosenthal to make your very own charm featuring an arrow going through a crescent moon, heart, star, or circle! All materials will be provided, and participants are welcome to take their finished pieces with them. Safety glasses are required to be worn during the program and will be provided. No prior woodworking experience is required.

This program is for kids ages 5 and up. Registration is not required but is recommended as space is limited.

Felting Class: Make a Needle-Felted “Critter”

Learn basic needle-felting skills with whimsical felter Michelle Martin. Participants will learn how to use wool fiber and special felting needles to create a fanciful, three-dimensional “critter.” A variety of wool colors and all materials will be provided. Appropriate for adults and children ages 10+. Registration begins 4/29.
