Writing Your Family Memoir with Jen Rubin

Writing Your Family Memoir with Jen Rubin

Community Rooms A and B and Kitchen
Sat, 06/08/2019 - 10:00am to 11:30am

In this 90 minute workshop, Jen Rubin will discuss her process of writing a family memoir that centered around the small business her family owned for 80 years. Jen will talk about how to balance 3 generations, deal with thorny family issues, and how to include enough history and sociology to inform the story but not so much that the central story is overwhelmed. Jen is a skilled storyteller and brought an oral storytelling approach to her writing. This will be an interactive workshop with a mixture of presentation, storytelling, Q & A, and small group work.

Jen Rubin is a former New Yorker who leads storytelling workshops around Madison, co-produces the Moth StorySlam in Madison, teaches the occasional social policy class at the University of Wisconsin School of Social Work, and works at the Wisconsin Historical Society Press. She has recently published her first book, We Are Staying: Eighty Years in the Life of a Family, a Store, and a Neighborhood. Jen is an obsessive maker of mixed tapes and quite possibly the best challah baker in town.

Perfect Harmony Men's Chorus presents : Love and Stonewall

Perfect Harmony Men's Chorus presents : Love and Stonewall

Meeting Room
Sat, 06/08/2019 - 10:30am to 11:00am

Fifty years ago this June, bar patrons and community members said “no more!” to a police raid of the Stonewall Inn and fought back, starting the modern LGBTQ rights movement. PHMC’s spring concert titled “Love and Stonewall” features as centerpiece the multi-movement piece “Quiet No More: A Choral Celebration of Stonewall,” which commemorates that anniversary. The work includes movements by a diverse group of LGBTQ composers setting the atmosphere leading up to the Stonewall Uprising. Perfect Harmony will perform selected movements from this new musical work at Alicia Ashman Library, as well as other thematically similar songs, such as "Make Them Hear You" from the musical Ragtime.

Perfect Harmony Men's Chorus creates, enriches, and transforms community through music. Its singing membership of 35 serves as the Madison areas gay, bi, trans, queer, and ally men's chorus.
