CONFINED: Honoring our Children Living with a Parent in Prison

CONFINED: Honoring our Children Living with a Parent in Prison

Madison Room
Wed, 10/03/2018 (All day)

CONFINED is a Madison Arts Commission Blink-funded collaboration between Cultural Connections, a Madison based program that links kids living with an incarcerated parent to long-term cultural arts opportunities, and artists from ArtWorking, a regional resource for artists and entrepreneurs with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

Here artists Romano Johnson and Brianna Richardson painted their interpretation of family on a mock prison cell* to symbolized how unjust sentencing and incarceration confines the entire family. The back panel features reproductions of drawings by Madison children who have experienced life with an incarcerated parent. The cell also features audiotaped interviews with people on both sides of this important issue—children and once incarcerated parents.

Step inside to sign your name in solidarity with the 2000 plus kids in Dane County and 5M kids across America who silently serve their parent’s sentence. Go away with facts to inform your perspective on how incarceration rates affect families and how children, in particular, suffer.

On display from October 2-6. Stop in during library hours to view the installation on the third floor. Confined will also be available for viewing on Gallery Night: Friday, October 5.

*The mock cell was designed and built by Philip Ashby, Wisconsin Public Television award-winning animator and set designer.
Pat Dillon, Cultural Connections director, can be contacted at 608-206-6584. www.culturalconnectionsmadison.com.
