Congratulations to Our Winners:

Grand Prize Winner: Ash Gartler (15) for "Dear Joni"

The Grand Prize Award-winning story this year, "Dear Joni," spoke to the contest’s theme of Roots by focusing on family relationships, and one character’s struggle to understand or move past painful situations that impacted them. Confronting some of the more difficult issues that families face, including the loss of a mother and wife to disease and the loss of a sibling and daughter to addiction, this story shares the vulnerable experience of being "stuck" or "rooted" to a feeling and unable to move on.

Other stories from the top six explore themes of friendship and self-identity, multi-generational traditions, facing your fears, and fulfilling your purpose.

You can read all of the winning pieces online or check them out in this year's anthology when it becomes available in print later this Fall.

The WE READ program is funded by Madison Public Library Foundation, Steve Stricker American Family Insurance Foundation, Friends of the Madison Public Library, Roots & Wings Foundation, Jane Doughty & David Wood and David Hall & Marjorie Devereaux.
