Madison Public Library partners with other agencies in the community to provide tax assistance.

Central Library

Free assistance from VITA volunteers to help you fill out and file your Federal and Wisconsin personal income taxes. Please call 266-6350 to make an appointment on or after that date. Some situations are outside the scope of the service--ask if in doubt.

REQUIRED by the IRS: Physical social security cards for you, your spouse (if a joint return is filed) and all dependents are required to use the VITA tax filing service.​ If you can't find yours, access information about getting a replacement before scheduling a tax filing appointment. You must fill out a form and either take it to the Madison Social Security office or mail it there so that you'll have it in time for your appointment.

Alicia Ashman Library

Appointment required. Please call 824-1780 to set up an appointment. Free service is geared toward people 60+ with low or moderate incomes, but all are welcome. Details on which types of returns qualify can be found on the Department of Revenue web site.

By appointment only. Free assistance from AARP volunteers to help you fill out and file your Wisconsin and Federal personal income taxes. Call 224-7100 to reserve a half-hour appointment. Availability is limited. Please note that preparers cannot assist with preparing Schedule C, E, F, or Married Filing Separate returns.

Financial Education Center (near Goodman South)

The Financial Education Center in The Villager, 2300 S Park St, Ste 101, (next to our Goodman South Madison Library) offers free assistance from VITA volunteers to help you file your Federal and Wisconsin personal income taxes. Walk-ins only. Hours begin January 27, last session is April 16. For more information, please call the Financial Education Center directly at 261-5077 or read their brochure.

Tax Assistance in Spanish

The Latino Community Engagement Team will be providing volunteers at three locations to translate for Spanish-speaking customers. Call the location you wish to visit to schedule an appointment.
