Celebrate Summer at the Summer Library Carnival on August 11!

Summer Library Carnival at Overture CenterThe third annual Summer Library Carnival is Wednesday, August 11, 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at Overture Center for the Arts and the Central Library.

Enjoy a special 10:30 a.m. performance by wonderful wacky juggler Andy Head at the Overture Center for the Arts. At 11:15, go next door to the Central Library for carnival games, crafts and more!  The entire event is free of charge and open to everyone.

Last year, over a thousand children and their grownups attended this popular event.  See pictures of the 2009 and 2008 carnivals on the library’s Flickr photosharing account.  And don’t forget to smile when you see our photographer this year!

Summer Reading Club and summer program sponsors include Madison Public Library Foundation, Friends of the Madison Public Library, EdVest, KnowHow2GoWisconsin, Madison Mallards Baseball, Noodles & Company, Olbrich Botanical Gardens, Overture Center for the Arts, Rocky Rococo’s Pizza, and South Central Library System, and photographer Peter Patau.

Art Fun for the Artsy and Not So Artsy

artworkBring the family and check out some cool art programs happening at the Madison Public Library.  These events are presented in conjunction with the library’s Summer Reading Club and are just a few of a series of fun events and programs for preschoolers through teenagers this summer.

Watercolor Painting with Trent - Join artist and youth librarian Trent Miller for an informative and fun watercolor painting class. Students entering grades 3 - 8 will have a blast making their own creative watercolor works of art at one of these sessions.

Mary Tooley’s Art in a Suitcase - Sensational Sharks - Explore the world of sharks through science specimens, puppets and more in this interactive art experience. Includes an art project.
Thursday, July 29, 2-3 p.m. at the Monroe Street Branch. Call 266-6390 or register online.

Bubble Art - Kids will make a set of stationary using colored bubble solution and straws. For ages 3+. Children under 8 must have an adult helper present.
Saturday, July 31, 11-12 p.m. at the Meadowridge Branch. Register online or call 288-6160.

Sunprints -  In this program, we’ll use water, sunshine, specially treated paper, and a little imagination to make beautiful Sunprints!
Monday, August 9, 3 - 4 p.m. at the Alicia Ashman Branch. Register online or call 824-1780.

Beach Frames - Make a decorative picture frame to remind you of that day of sun, surf and sand. All materials provided. Ages 7 & up.

Traveling, studying, or need to learn English?

The 15 (and ever growing!) English as a Second Language courses include lessons for native speakers of Spanish, French, Vietnamese, Arabic, Russian, Greek, and Japanese.

Mango is FREE at any Madison Public Library location, as well as Middleton library, and remotely for City of Madison and Middleton residents.  Note: Users will need Java and Flash. Speakers and microphone (and, if you’re in the library, headphones) are required for full functionality.

So log on and get a taste of Mango. It’s easy and very refreshing. And, as always, if you need help, ask a librarian.

Library Closed Monday, July 5, for Independence Day

All Madison Public Library locations are closed on Monday, July 5, for Independence Day. You can still use the library when we’re closed: place holds in LINKcat, return items to our bookdrops, or use our 24/7 online reference service, AskAway. Have a safe and happy holiday!

SHARKS! in the Library

Join Mary Tooley for an Art in a Suitcase presentation exploring the world of Sensational Sharks. The program includes a giant fossil tooth from a prehistoric shark and a five foot long Great White Shark puppet! Kids will make a 3-D take-home art project. Fun for all ages!

Libraries Closed for Memorial Day

All Madison Public Library locations will be closed on Monday, May 31 for Memorial Day. While we’re closed, use our book drops to return items, place holds or check your record through LINKcat, or connect to AskAway to talk with a non-local librarian. History buffs can read the story of Memorial Day, courtesy of the Wisconsin Historical Society.

Make a Splash with Summer Reading Club!

Save the date! Summer Reading Club begins on June 1! Come to any Madison Public Library location or visit our web site starting Monday, June 1 to join the Summer Reading Club. Every book or hour read (or read to) counts. Earn great prizes, including free event tickets, free pizza and a free book! Prizes are available starting June 18. Pack a picnic supper and head to the Gardens for a fun-filled family concert! Come, rain or shine, at 6:30 p.m. to play with bubbles and enjoy other water-related fun. Then, at 7:00 p.m., Stuart Stotts will get you singing and laughing while you munch! No registration required.

April 11 - 17 is National Library Week!

Madison Public Library will be celebrating National Library Week with two great city-wide promotions!

First, Culver’s is supporting libraries by offering a free scoop of Culver’s Frozen Custard to each child 11 or younger who turns in a coloring sheet featuring their favorite book between April 11 and April 30. All children who complete the coloring sheet will also be entered into a drawing for a free Team Scoopie Kids meal! Pick up a coloring sheet at your local library, or print off a sheet and bring it in to your library.

Second, the Libraries for Real Life project is offering a grand prize of $100 (and other, smaller prizes) for anyone who submits a story describing how the library has affected their life between the dates of April 11 and May 12.  Stories can be submitted via paper form, available at your library, or via the Libraries for Real Life web site. Share with us the ways in which the library has had a positive impact in your life or your community!

Registration for the Book Club Café Begins Today!

You can now register for the 13th Annual Friends of Madison Public Library Book Club Café, to be held at Olbrich Gardens on Wednesday, May 26 at 7 p.m. We are pleased to welcome Michelle Wildgen, author of two novels set in Madison: You’re Not You and But Not For Long. Wildgen lives in Madison, and attended the University of Wisconsin and Sarah Lawrence College in New York. She also writes about food, is a senior editor of Tin House magazine, and editor of an anthology, Food & Booze: A Tin House Literary Feast. Her work has appeared in such publications as The New York Times, and O, the Oprah Magazine, as well as numerous anthologies and journals. Please visit the author’s website for more information.
