Happy 50th Birthday to Lakeview Library!

Alicia

Lakeview is celebrating its 50th birthday this year! The Lakeview Branch Library opened on the North side next to Jung’s in January 1959. With the opening of the Sherman Plaza in March 1966, Lakeview moved to its present location, where it has been expanded and remodeled twice to fit the growing neighborhood it serves. The Friends of Lakeview Branch Library, formed in 1963, was the first support group for any library in the area and will help us celebrate this milestone by sponsoring programs and treats throughout 2009.

Help us celebrate with these events:

Northside History and Library Birthday Reception
Thursday, April 30 at 6:00 p.m.
Ann Waidelich, retired librarian and Madison historian, presents a slide lecture on the history of the Northeast side from the Esquire Club to Cherokee Marsh and from Oscar Mayer and Truax Field to Mendota Mental Health Institute. A reception to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Lakeview Branch, complete with birthday treats, will precede the 6:30pm presentation.

Troy Gardens
Saturday, May 23 at 2:00 p.m.
A world-class organization right in our backyard, Troy Gardens contains community gardens, a farm, co-housing, natural areas, kids’ gardens, and is profiled by Marge Pitts, of the Board of Directors, in another of our series of Library birthday programs for the neighborhood.
