Little Golden Books Legacy

Molly

Did you know that goldenbooksLittle Golden Books had their start in Wisconsin?  Originally published in Racine by West Side Publishing Company, these small 25 cent books paved the way for the current world of publishing and marketing. Sophisticated marketing schemes, as well as modern advertising and book selling practices resulted from the techniques that were tested on this series of books for children.

A new book published by Leonard MarcusGolden Legacy:  How Golden Books Won Children’s Hearts, Changed Publishing Forever, and Became an American Icon Along the Way delves into the history behind this Wisconsin publishing legend and how titles like the Poky Little Puppy and Doctor Dan the Bandage Man have endeared generations of goldenbookstreasuryimgreaders.

If you are looking for these familiar stories at the library, a recent collection of Golden Books, A Family Treasury of Little Golden Books: 46 Best-Loved Stories with their original illustrations is available, as well as guides for Golden Book collectors.

I went to a yard sale one day and I found two little Little Golden Books that measure 2 5/8 x 2 3/4 not in the best condition but, I have never seen this size of LGB’s before. One has a date only of 1947 and tihe other one has 3 dates of 1957 and a date of just 1954 with a renew date of 1985? Can you direct me or give me more information on these types of books.

    Thank you.

    Hi Wendy,

There are several excellent price guides for Golden Books including Tomart’s Price Guide to Golden Book Collectibles, Collecting Little Golden Books: A Collector’s Identification & Price Guide by Steve Santi and Warman’s Children’s Books : Identification and Price Guide. Based on the size of the books you have, they might be “Tiny Golden Books”. These books are described as 2-1/4″ x 3-1/4″, have 24 pages, heavy board covers, and have “A Tiny Golden Book” identifier written on them somewhere.

There were also some spin-offs called Mini-Golden Tales and Golden Tiny Tales with soft covers and Little Little Golden Books that are 2-3/4″ square and were sold as a series and were also used as a promotion for Hardees Children’s Meals.

If you respond with the titles of the books, types of covers and any other characteristics, we might be able to narrow it down for you. Thanks for contacting us!
