Festive Groundbreaking Kicks Off Sequoya Commons

Barb D.

Many neighbors, friends and interested library users joined dignitaries and officials at the groundbreaking ceremony for Sequoya Commons, the future home of the new Sequoya Branch Library, on April 25th.  Despite chilly weather, the atmosphere was festive, complete with shovels, hard hats, and ice cream — courtesy of the Chocolate Shoppe!

With earth moving equipment in the background, Mayor Dave Cieslewicz praised the Sequoya Commons development as a great example of a forward-looking urban infill project.  Developer Joe Krupp attributed the surprisingly large number people present to community interest in the new Library, and owner Jack Kelly offered a brief version of his own history as part of the Midvale neighborhood.  Library Board President Tripp Widder underscored the importance to the neighborhood and the community at large of this much needed new Sequoya Branch library — the busiest library in the South Central Library System.

The timetable for the Sequoya Commons project, and the new Sequoya Branch Library, is 12 to 15 months, according to Krupp.  That will complete Phase I of the two-phased redevelopment of the current Midvale Shopping Center.  The Library hopes to relocate to its new building in the Spring of 2008.
