Lakeview Library All About Community

2144137951_2f5d37e4dc.jpgThe holidays are a traditional time for remembering and celebrating family and community.  Madison libraries promote community each and every day, and nothing says this better than this article in the December 21-27 issue of The Madison Times, “The Right Library: Lakeview Library Serves Community.”  In the article, you’ll meet 4 year old Tahji Jackson and his grandmother, Renee Taylor, and find how the library is an integral part of their community.  Article author Lisa Nunez is a part time employee at the Lakeview Library.

Did You Get Your Copy of Sequels?

sequels.gifYesterday, among the holiday sale flyers and late Christmas cards, I found my copy of Sequels, the Madison Public Library Foundation’s donor newsletter.

Did you receive yours?

Because the demands for library services and the needs and opportunities facing the library are growing much faster than the public funds available to support them, the goal of the Foundation is to enrich, not replace, traditional tax-based support through private fund-raising from individuals, businesses and foundations.  If you’re looking for a last minute tax break, a late holiday gift, or want to thank the library for another year of books, movies, research assistance, programs, and internet service, please consider a donation to the Foundation.  You’ll see your name in print in the next issue of Sequels!

Winter/Spring Kidspages Now Available

kp.gifOur Winter/Spring 2008 issues of Kidspages are now available in English and in Spanish. View and print online, or stop by your nearest library to pick up an oversized color copy of your own. While you’re at it, take an extra copy for a friend or colleague!

Kidspages isn’t a complete list of our programs, though. More programs for all ages are being added weekly to our online calendar. Sign up for programs online and you’ll receive an email confirmation. You can even receive alerts of a particular type of program (preschool storytimes, for example) three weeks before they begin. Contact Tana Elias at madtech @ scls.lib.wi.us for details, or find a program you like online and click “Notify me” to receive alerts of similar programs at that location. You can change your alerts at any time.

All Libraries Closed December 30-January 1

christmaswreath.jpgAll Madison Public Library locations are closed for the Christmas holiday on Monday, December 31 and Tuesday, January 1. The Central Library will also be closed Sunday, December 30. You can still use the library when we’re closed: place holds in LINKcat**, return items to our bookdrops, or use our 24/7 online reference service, AskAway.

**From 10:35 p.m. Monday, December 31st until approximately 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 1st, 2008, LINKcat will be down for maintenance.  This maintenance is required to keep the library’s catalog system operating at an optimal level.  We apologize for the inconvenience, and wish you a happy holiday season.

Interlibrary Loan Requests Not Processed December 23 - January 2

You know you can request titles via LINKcat and have them delivered from any public library in a seven-county area.  In library jargon, that’s called placing a hold.  But you can also request that we borrow materials that aren’t in LINKcat, a service the library calls interlibrary loan.

We rely on the generosity of libraries around the state and across the nation to fill these requests for us.  Many of those libraries are academic, and they often are closed through the holidays.  Because of this, any interlibrary loan requests received between December 23, 2007, and January 2, 2008 will be processed beginning January 3, 2008.

Recognize Your Loved Ones With a Gift to the Library

christmaspresent.jpgLooking for a last-minute gift for your favorite reader? There is no better way to honor someone than making a contribution in his or her honor to the Madison Public Library Foundation.  An honorary gift to the Foundation is a gift that will keep on giving for the many people served by the Library for years to come.

Your contribution will be acknowledged through a note to the honoree as well as included in Sequels, the Foundation’s quarterly newsletter.  Happy Holidays!

Library Use Helps Madison to No. 2 in Forbes’ Education Ranking

kidsstudying.jpgForbes ranked the Madison area #2 in a recent list of best places to educate your child.  Public library popularity was one of five factors included in the ranking (Madison received an A+).

The Capital Times and WISC-TV both reported on the Forbes study, which was released online on December 12.  Read the article online: Where to Educate Your Children. David Savageau.  Forbes Online, December 12, 2007.

LINKcat Notices Not Reaching Some Verizon Customers

Many libraries are reporting that email notices to Verizon customers have recently been bouncing due to Verizon’s antispam solution.

If your email ends in verizon.net and you haven’t been getting notices about available holds, you may wish to request that we send your notices via a telephone message or a letter until the problem has been resolved.  When the problem is resolved, we’ll post information here.

A reminder to everyone who receives email notices from us - if you or your email provider uses spam protection, please configure your email to accept email from the scls.lib.wi.us domain.
