A New Central Library: 126 South Hamilton Street

The Central Library at 201 W. Mifflin St. has relocated to 126 S. Hamilton St. and will remain open there until the new Central Library opens in 2013.

Our much smaller public space hosts a smaller collection of new and popular books, feature DVDs, music CDs and audiobooks on CD, as well as a limited selection of newspapers, magazines and children's materials.  We have 22 public computers with 2-hour time limits and high-speed wi-fi available during all open hours.

Most of our collection will be housed off-site but still available by reservation through LINKcat with pickup at the Central Library at 126 S. Hamilton St.

How big is the space?
About 3,000 square feet. 

What services do you offer at Hamilton Street?
Reference and research service, book checkout, holds pickup, after-hours book drop, public computers & printing, free wi-fi, computer assistance. We have a small space reserved for laptop users.

What services do you not offer at Hamilton Street?
Our seating is very limited and we do not have a separate children's room, reading room, or meeting rooms.  We will not have programs or large classes at the Hamilton Street library but are working with other downtown organizations and agencies like the Madison Senior Center to offer classes and storytimes.

Are there bike racks?
There are many bike racks at Hamilton at Capitol Square, about a half block walk.  They are not right outside the door, but they are plentiful at the Square.

Where can I park?
Metered parking along S. Fairchild or S. Hamilton where available, as well as other streets within a short walk.  Dane County parking ramp within one block. City parking ramps within four blocks at Government East Garage, 200 S. Pinckney & 100 E. Wilson or Overture Ramp at 300 W. Mifflin & 300 W. Dayton (see all city parking in downtown Madison)
