Bestselling author and Madison-area native Jacquelyn Mitchard will be appearing at the Sequoya Library on Thursday, August 14 at 7:00 p.m. to discuss and read from her newly published young adult novel The Midnight Twins.
Mitchard’s first novel, The Deep End of the Ocean, was named by USA Today as one of the ten most influential books of the past 25 years, second only to J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. The Deep End of the Ocean was chosen by Oprah as the first selection for her book club in 1996. Mitchard has written numerous works of fiction for adults, and has been nominated for the Orange Prize for Fiction in Britain. Recently, she has expanded her writings to books for young adults.
The Midnight Twins is the first in a trilogy of teen mysteries about identical twin sisters with psychic powers who were born on New Year’s Eve. The author will read from and discuss the novel. Refreshments will be served.
This event will benefit the new Sequoya Branch Library, and is co-sponsored by the Madison Public Library Foundation. For more information, please call 266-6385.

Ever wonder what Madison police officers do when they’re not on duty? Sometimes they read! From Charles Darwin to George Orwell, Willa Cather to Dr. Seuss, officers on the downtown beat read a little of everything. See their picks at our Off the Beat booklist - and check out some great pictures of the officers with S. V. Medaris’ artwork from her exhibit, The Whole Hog.

Join us this evening at the South Madison Branch at 6:30 p.m. to discuss his newest book on community solutions for renewable energy. Greg Pahl has been involved in environmental issues for more than 20 years. In the 1970s he lived “off the grid” in a home in Vermont with a wind turbine. He has written numerous books and articles about biodiesel, wind power, solar energy, electric cars, and “green” home building materials. A book signing and reception will follow Greg’s presentation. Copies of his new book, The Citizen-Powered Energy Handbook (Chelsea Green Publishing, 2007), will be on sale at this event from Rainbow Books for $21.95. His previous book, Biodiesel, will be available for $18.00. Co-sponsored by The Friends of the South Madison Branch Library and the Rainbow Bookstore Cooperative.

The 60 books collection debuted yesterday at the Central Library. It will be on display for the rest of the week in the Madison Room on the second floor. The viewing hours are: Thursday, noon to 9 p.m., Friday noon to 6, Saturday 11-5 and
Sunday 2-5. This is a community art project; the Bone Folders Guild made 60 beautiful journals and they circulated among the South Central Library System libraries for a year. Now the results are in and all of the books are gathered together for viewing. There are a wide variety of entries — children’s artwork, poems, essays, drawings and photos. Make time in your Book Festival weekend to come to the library and be amazed by the creative talent in our area.

Do you or your book group use the library’s book discussion kits? Help us build this growing collection of titles by donating a new or used copy courtesy of Amazon’s Wish List service. You may also donate your own gently used copy of one (or more!) of the titles on the list.
If you’re donating your own copy, please give it to any Madison Public Library librarian and indicate it is for the Book Club Kit Collection and that you saw the title on the Amazon Wish List. In either case, your gift is tax-deductible. To keep a record of your donation, fill out our donation form and that will serve as a receipt for your gift. If you are donating via Amazon, we will mail a receipt to you when we receive the book.
