Gently told

Liz C. - Alicia Ashman

gentle.jpgIn A Gentle Rain by Deborah Smith Kara Whittenbrook is the heiress to a great fortune who discovers, after the death of her parents, that she was adopted.  Reeling from grief and shock, she decides to find out more about her natural parents, Mac and Lila Tolbert.  Smith’s novel takes the reader into the unknown world of Cracker Floridians.  Crackers are the inhabitants of a Florida the average tourist at Disney World doesn’t even know exists.

While Kara explores her past and some new relationships, the reader is introduced to the other concerns facing her biological parents and their extended family.  These include ecology, cattle ranching, people with special needs, rodeo barrel racing, and even mermaids.  Touching, interesting characters and absorbing storytelling leaves the reader wishing the story didn’t end so quickly.
