Don’t waste the pretty

I have been very curious about how a self-help book that addresses difficult dating situations could be turned into a movie starring Jennifer Aniston and Ben Affleck, so I thought I would check it out myself. After reading He’s Just Not That into You: The No-Excuses Truth to Understanding Guys by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo, I am still unsure. But amused. And more likely to see the movie.
Former Sex and the City writer Tuccillo and SATC consultant Behrendt offer a series of questions and answers concerning possible dating scenarios and whether or not a relationship is doomed. The answers may be harsh, but they make sense. Behrendt doles out advice like, “do not make excuses if things aren’t going the way you want them to. If a guy truly likes you, he will let you know immediately. If a man wants you, he will do the work. No matter how hard it is, if he wants to find you, he will.”
This no-nonsense advice lets women off the hook. It encourages women to stop obsessing. To stop plotting. To stop scheming. To not get tricked into asking the guy out. Behrendt assures the reader that, as a woman, you are good enough to be asked out. You are cool. You are innately hot. You are smart. And most importantly: you have the tools to be in control and remain the lovely person you are. Behrendt and Tuccillo also include “super good, really helpful exercises” for confused women. Their final advice: don’t waste the pretty.
I have no idea how this will translate into a movie, as there is no recognizable plot, but the premise is funny. I can only imagine that some of the questions and answers will be reenacted by various attractive actors and that could be highly entertaining. Coming to a theatre near you sometime in 2008.
