Yummy

include("adsense.php"); ?>I start every day with a Cookie Dough Pop Tart and a big old cup of coffee. I am not a poster child for healthy eating.
Which makes it doubly weird that I’m fascinated by “what you eat will KILL you” type books. Just this year I’ve been through The End of Food, Fat Land, Food Politics, and Death by Supermarket. Although it’s less scary than the former titles, I also recently took a look at Twinkie, Deconstructed: My Journey to Discover How the Ingredients Found in Processed Foods are Grown, Mined (Yes, Mined), and Manipulated into What America Eats, by Steve Ettlinger.
I didn’t actually get the whole thing read; I may finally have simply had my fill of this genre. But Ettlinger does a nice job of going through the ingredients list on a Twinkies package and exploring where all if its ingredients come from, including phosphates, which are mined, and polysorbate 60, which includes corn, oil palms, and petroleum.
Uch. I haven’t had a Twinkie for years, and I think I’ll continue that trend. I’ll also be studiously avoiding the ingredients list on my beloved Pop Tarts, because frankly? I can’t face the day without them.

I used to have cherry Pop-Tarts and a bottle of Starbuck’s Frappucino every day for YEARS. Thinking about the combined sweetness and creaminess today makes me kinda queasy. Now that I know more about high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils, I try to avoid them, but it makes me sad. Have you read the book Skinny Bit*%? I thought that it might shed some exciting new light on the “eat right” topic, but it basically says you have to be a vegan and not consume any alcohol or caffeine. Total bummer.
