M. C. Beaton is a prolific mystery author, who is popular for two series. One of his series is about Agatha Raisin and the other, the one I’m familiar with, is about Hamish MacBeth. Death of a Maid is the 22nd entry in this series, but Beaton always seems to have another murder for Hamish to solve. Hamish is a red-headed Scotsman, who loves his small town police station in Lochdubh, and who has resisted any attempts at promotion from his simple job as village policeman. He also has had several relationships with women, but can never seem to commit to marriage.
In this book, Mrs. Gillespie, a cleaning lady, has been found dead, killed with a blow to the head from her own cleaning bucket. Hamish quickly discovers that she is a blackmailer, and was universally disliked, even by her own family. As he investigates, there are also a few other killings.
Hamish of course unravels the mystery, in a way that does not give him too much credit. And for my fellow audiobook listeners, this is a great audiobook. Graeme Malcolm has read several of these books and has a wonderful Scottish accent.

I have heard Graeme Malcolm read several of the MC Beaton Hamish MacBeth novels and he does indeed have a nice Scottish accent and a nice delivery. i have also heard Davina Porter do these novels, and she is wonderful. I love her Scottish accent and the character voicing! I find myself seeking out her recordings.
