chickenwithplumsimgMarjane Satrapi, author of Persepolis, continues her family lore in a new graphic novel featuring her great-uncle Nasser Ali Khan.  Chicken with Plums takes place in Tehran over approximately nine days in 1958, with flashbacks to earlier events.

Nasser Ali is a famous tar player and the reader learns that in a fit of anger, his wife has broken his tar.  Without his tar, Nasser Ali believes he has no reason to go on living and decides to die.  He goes to his bed and over the course of eight days, examines his life, his disappointments and heartbreaks, and then dies.

Readers will recognize family members from Persepolis and Embroideries, and Satrapi’s thoughtful, humorous and melancholy portrayal of her great-uncle and his infuriating family reminds us all to make the most of life.
