Worth the horror hype

include("adsense.php"); ?>I didn’t know anything about Joe Hill’s novel Heart-Shaped Box, except that everyone was talking about it.*
So, I needed a novel, and I wasn’t averse to being scared. And the story, creepy ghost imagery and hauntings and ouija boards and all, did not disappoint. You know what else didn’t disappoint? Jude and Georgia, the main characters, of whom I became quite fond in the end…which I won’t reveal to you, because above all things, this book is a thriller. And to be told the end of a thriller is much less, well, thrilling.
*After I read the book I found out something else about Joe Hill; namely, who is father is. Want to know? Read this review.

I loved this book - a classic, scary ghost story. I’ve been recommending it a lot.
I was once a big fan of Stephen King, back in his early days when he wrote a simple, truly scary story with great characters. And lots of musical references. And that’s what this book is too.
Suppose Joe was taking notes at the master’s knee?

Well, wherever Joe got his lessons, I think he did a good job of learning how to write a great, creepy ghost story! I myself haven’t read a lot of Stephen King recently but maybe I’ll have to go back and check out his early stuff…
