Wedding day blues What kind of girl wants to play football?

Gotta love the Brits

Sarah - Alicia Ashman

I have a little problem with British humor:  I am addicted to it.

Father TedYou wouldn’t think this would be a problem, but it is.  For one thing, I find myself watching (and then wanting to discuss) some truly bizarre British television series, like Black Books and Father Ted.  Trust me, you don’t know lonely until you’ve tried to find another American with whom to discuss Black Books.

Round Ireland with a Fridge by Tony HawksI have this problem with books, too.  One of my all-time favorites, Round Ireland with a Fridge, by Tony Hawks (NOT the skateboarder Tony Hawk), is a book I would LOVE to talk over with other readers.  Hawks, a British comedian, after a night of drinking in the pub, woke up next to this note:

“I hereby bet Tony Hawks the sum of One Hundred Pounds that he cannot hitch-hike round the circumference of Ireland, with a fridge, within one calendar month.”

I’ll leave it to you to get this book and find out if he wins the bet.  And, if you like it, you might also want to consider his sequel, another bet-driven round of merriment, titled Playing the Moldovans at Tennis.  And then please come back and comment, wouldja?  I’m desperate to talk all things Brit with someone.

I loved Round Ireland with a Fridge. I think humorous travel non-fiction is my favorite kind of travel writing (Bill Bryson’s Walk in the Woods is a great one for that).
