I thought it had been awhile since I had seen a new Sherman Alexie novel come over the desk and after some research it turns out it has been ten years! If you haven’t read Alexie before, his latest work wouldn’t be the first one I would suggest (I really enjoyed Indian Killer). Unless of course you happened to be 18 years old, then it should definitely be on your summer reading list.
Flight is the story of Zits, an Indian foster kid, whose life like his namesake facial appearance, has been quite crappy. This is until his fate takes an unexpected turn, when during a potential criminal event, he experiences a paranormal experience and finds himself inhabitating different bodies of people from the past. Part time-traveler, part teenage angst, part history lesson, this story is well-written, witty and wise. Does Zits follow through with his crime when he makes it back into his own self again? Will his crappy foster care life continue? I highly recommend reading this one to find out.
OK, you don’t have be 18.
