Strap on your chaps

include("adsense.php"); ?>I confess. I’m mildly embarrassed by my enduring love of Larry McMurtry’s Lonesome Dove. Nothing he’s written during the past 15 or so years has pleased me. At all. But Lonesome Dove always makes me happy, and sad, and worried, and excited.
Peopled entirely with zany and lovable characters, Lonesome
Dove follows two former Texas Rangers, Augustus McCrae and Woodrow Call. Gus is the loosey-goosey partner; if Call were any more stoic, he’d be a tree. With a rag-tag group of cowboys and a herd of cattle stolen from Mexico, Gus and Call head north to Montana to start a ranch.
Even if the thought of westerns makes you turn up your nose like a steaming pile of you-know-what, consider this one. It’s by turns hilarious and heart-breaking.
