Mayhem in Miami

Gregg - Sequoya

hw7.gifI love it when my reading is ahead of the pop culture curve for a change.  Dexter is a new series on Showtime based on Jeff Lindsay’s novels.  Darkly Dreaming Dexter is a totally twisted tale of Dexter, a serial killer with a social conscience. When Dexter was young he was adopted by a police officer who recognized that he had sinister urges.  Dexter’s father encouraged him to channel his murderous impulses to kill those who were beyond the reach of the law, such as mob bosses and the like.  During the day Dexter holds down a job working in a police forensics lab.  In this book Dexter matches wits with another serial killer as they play cat and mouse, chasing each other all over Miami.

The book’s south Florida setting, and tongue in cheek humor make it read like a Carl Hiaasen novel, with a whole lot more gory bits.  The depictions and descriptions of Dexter’s deeds are graphic, and while they are not the focus of the book, if you are at all queasy about such things don’t pick it up.  If you’re intrigued enough, there is a sequel, Dearly Devoted Dexter.
