This one has them all! Two I put aside

In bed with 3 dogs

Mary K. - Central

I have never had a dog and probably never will, but I can dog.gifunderstand the comfort that her 3 dogs give Abigail Thomas, author of a poignant set of essays A Three Dog Life.  Even though it was a dog that caused her husband Rich’s head injury (he was walking the dog when it escaped its leash and he ran into the street to rescue it and then was hit by a car.), Abigail still loves and gets great comfort from the dogs.

The book focuses on the aftermath of the severe head injuries.  Although she can’t care for him at home (she tried it briefly) and Rich is institutionalized, Abigail still cares deeply for him and beautifully describes the relationship they now have.  Rich has lost his short term memory, but they still have a strong bond, and she touchingly learns to appreciate him as he is.  Rich lives fully in the present moment and his story emphasizes what we all know, but often find hard to accept: that we cannot control the future no matter how hard we try.

Thomas changes her whole life after the accident: relocates to be closer to Rich, owns and maintains a home on her own, and adds more dogs to her life, hence the 3 dogs.  She visits often and brings Rich to her home once a week.

This short book is beautifully written, very humorous at times, and written by a strong and appealing woman.  Read it even if you are not a dog owner.
