Longing for good SF

Lately I’ve been reading some good books, but none that are wowing me. I realized that what I was longing for was some good science fiction. Since I didn’t find anything on the shelf here at the library that grabbed me, I dug through my tbr (to be read) bookshelves at home and came up with Karen Traviss‘ City of Pearl.
Environmental Hazard Enforcement Officer Shan Frankland agreed to join the mission to Cavanagh’s Star though the journey will take 150 earth years to complete. Initially the task set before her and the team seems simple. A human colony was set up on Cavanagh’s Star and earth has lost contact. Shan is supposed to find out what happened to the colony and help determine if the planet is valuable to the corporate interests back on earth.
If you’ve read any science fiction, you’ll know it’s never that simple. Something is guarding the planet and he doesn’t take kindly to interlopers. This is the first in a projected six-book series (four of which are already in print) and it certainly hit the SF spot for me. If you have other suggestions, I’d love to hear them.
