include("adsense.php"); ?>The Fifth Annual Wisconsin Book Festival continues! Today’s events at the Madison Public Library - Central include:
Marilyn Taylor – 1:00 - 2:00 pm
Presenting: Resucitating the Hopeless Poem
You probably have several of these potentially brilliant poems moldering in a folder somewhere, waiting to be rescued with the help of a group of poets who care. You’ll find these poets in this workshop, where we will concentrate on some nearly foolproof strategies for rescuing old poems, abandoned poems, poems that still haunt you, even though you gave up on them long ago. Near-disasters and hopeless cases welcome.
Pamela Genin, Laura Jean Baker and Ron Rindo – 3:30 - 4:30 pm
Presenting: Writing the Midwest: Exploring Rich Literary Territory
This three-member, multi-genre panel, composed of native Wisconsinites, will discuss what characteristics make Midwestern writing “Midwestern,” reading short segments of literature written by their favorite Midwestern writers as well as discussing ways in which they incorporate, reject, manipulate, and otherwise negotiate regional aspects in their own writing.
Jacalyn Eddy, Stuart Stotts, Gwenyth Swain, Anne Lundin — 5:00 - 6:30 pm
Presenting: Radical Roots of Children’s Literature
Jacalyn Eddy, author of Bookwomen: Creating an Empire in Children’s Book Publishing, 1919-1939, describes the profound influence and contributions of the women who founded the review journal, The Horn Book. Early library services are Stuart Stotts’ topic in his book, Books in a Box: Lutie Stearns and the Traveling Libraries of Wisconsin. Gwenyth Swain, author of the biography, Wanda Gág: Storybook Artist, presents Gág, the author and illustrator of such classic picture books as Millions of Cats. The discussion will be facilitated by Anne Lundin, UW Professor in the School of Library and Information Studies and author of Constructing the Cannon of Children’s Literature.
