If you only read one zombie novel this year…

The zombie story, everyone knows it. Some great catastrophe turns all of humanity into a bunch of brainless flesh eating zombies. A few human survivors hole up somewhere and hope for the best. Been there, done that right?
Monster Island by David Wellington has some of these elements, but he has added numerous twists to the basic plot, that makes it well worth reading.
The greatest strength of the book is the way that Wellington keeps you turning the pages; every chapter ends with a mini cliffhanger. This work was originally released as an internet only serial novel, and has that feel to it.
Another part that I liked was that is wasn’t a gross out; sure there were some gross parts (hey it’s zombies after all) but the story takes precedence.
This novel is the first of a trilogy, if you can’t wait for the sequels to be published in paper, you can read Monster Nation and Monster Planet online, in addition to other stories on Wellington’s website.

Well, Gregg, you recommended “The Church of Dead Girls,” which was one of the best fiction titles I read all year. So I’m pretty excited to take your word for it again on this one. Thanks for the recommendation of what will probably be my one “zombie novel” this month.

Just reading Publisher’s Weekly and I see that Wellington has a prequel coming out in October. It’s called Monster Nation: A Zombie Novel. So be on the lookout.
