Living in the ‘burbs

After a few months of a steady diet of chick lit, it always seems like a good idea to replenish the literary well by reading
a classic and it was found this summer in an excellent novel called Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates. This book, a finalist for the National Book Award in 1962, would be an excellent choice for a book group to tackle especially if you’d like something other than the latest on Oprah’s booklist (not that she hasn’t chosen some good ones.)
Frank and Alice have just moved from NYC to Connecticut. They are living in the suburbs and not having a good time of it. The arguments, affairs and turmoil that fill this novel would make for a lively discussion of what has changed and what has stayed the same ‘out in the burbs.’ After reading this out in my own planned subdivision called “Liberty Place” I am tempted to start my own novel about could be going on behind all those closed doors and drawn windowshades. Read Revolutionary Road and find out what happened behind Frank and Alice’s white picket fence.

I think I found it on “blog of a bookslut” mentioned on another person’s summer reading list. very easy to read, but full of great writing. hope you like it as much as i did.
