Wanted: Wordstardom Living in the ‘burbs

His Dark Materials

Jon - Central Library

GoldenSmall.gifThe idea that Philip Pullman had updated Milton’s Paradise Lost as a trilogy of coming-of-age science fiction novels for teenagers first struck me as wonderfully strange. After finishing the His Dark Materials trilogy, I was impressed by how he managed the many complex issues so deftly while keeping the plot moving so swiftly. The trilogy turned out to be some of the most compelling reading I’ve done in recent memory.

Thankfully, all of the volumes, The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass, have already been published, so you can race through them without a pause. Though the series is already very popular, a movie of the first volume is sure to increase interest. And, if Milton doesn’t appeal to you, maybe terrifying uncles, armored bears, and a mysterious substance known as Dust can help convince you to give these wonderful stories a try.

I loved this series. Fans of it should also try Garth Nix’s Abhorsen Trilogy.

If you are a fan of audio books, give The Golden Compass a try! The reading features a full cast of characters and feels more like a play then a traditional book on tape. This is my all time favorite audio book, closley followed by The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass.
