In Mel Odom’s Hunters of the Dark Sea we follow the adventures of first mate Ethan Swain on the whaling vessel Reliant. Think you have problems? Check out Ethan’s: His captain is a tyrant, the Reliant is being chased by both pirates and the law, and a malevolent being from another dimension is stalking all ships in the area. This is an old-fashioned, rip-roaring read.
Arrgh! The second selection be The Scar by China Mieville. In this richly imagined world, we follow the adventures of Bellis Coldwine, who is abducted on the sea and taken to Armada. Armada is a floating pirate city that consists of thousands of ships lashed together, and manned (creatured) by outcasts from all races and civilizations. Bellis learns about the history of Armada (by working in the library, naturally) and the plot of Armada’s leaders to obtain power beyond imgaining. This book will demand you pay attention more then Odom’s book, but it is no less exciting to read. Shortlisted for Britain’s Arthur C. Clarke Award in 2003.

Arrgh, you old sea dog. Lovely recommendations. Now, where is my eye patch?
