But he seemed so polite!

A review of I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen

Bear’s hat is missing. After a simple, somber interrogation of every forest animal he sees, Bear has given up hope of ever finding his hat. Until he suddenly remembers something curious on the head of one of the animals he spoke to…. This book’s understated illustrations match the dark, dry humor of the dialogue perfectly. Although it is a picture book, the simple text would also be a good choice for beginning readers to try out. I won’t spoil the end of this book for you, but I’d recommend you avoid stealing a bear’s hat!

This one is fun for adults too because of the sly humor of the pictures and text. As soon as I finished reading it I started passing it around to every person I knew. One friend, who has a problem with a certain animal eating her plants every year, found the ending very satisfying.

This is also getting some Caldecott buzz on some librarian blogs.

I thought this book was super funny and loved the way the color of the text matched the various animals.  I had to do a lot of story editing with my toddler, though.  We're not quite ready for the surprise at the end, yet.
