Raptors at the Library!

Sequoya Library
11/11/2017
1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Have you ever seen a falcon, hawk or owl up close and personal? The birds make learning a personal experience and are the best way to present wildlife education. Join Dianne Moller, executive director of Hoo’s Woods Raptor Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to environmental education and conservation of birds, along with Catlyn, a 2013 peregrine hatched from the MG&E building downtown Madison and Wesley, a snowy owl. Because many of the education birds have lifelong injuries that make them non-releasable, they are permanent residents of Hoo’s Woods Raptor Center, http://www.hooswoods.org

This program is for all ages and requires no registration. However, to provide more space for attendees, most seating will be on the floor, with a limited number of chairs at the back of the room. For more information, call 608-266-6385.

Book Discussion of UW-Madison's 2017 Go Big Read: Hillbilly Elegy

Book Discussion of UW-Madison's 2017 Go Big Read: Hillbilly Elegy

Sequoya Library
11/30/2017
6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Join in the discussion of UW-Madison’s 2017 Go Big Read Book, “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis” by J.D. Vance.

This New York Times bestseller is personal reflection on upward mobility in America seen through the lens of a white, working-class family in the Midwest. Author J.D. Vance grew up in the Rust Belt city of Middletown, Ohio, and the Appalachian town of Jackson, Kentucky. He enlisted in the Marine Corps after high school and served in Iraq, then went on to graduate from Ohio State University and Yale Law School. He has since become a principal at a leading Silicon Valley investment firm and a contributing writer to the National Review. Through his memoir, he shares experiences from his difficult childhood and how they have shaped his life. His story has resonated with many people and has sparked discussion about social, economic, and political issues nation-wide - and was chosen as the 2017 Go Big Read title to keep the conversation going. Visit http://www.madisonpubliclibrary.org/go-big-read to find more information, including other discussion dates, related events, and suggestions for further reading.
