"In 1910, a Chicago steelworker accidentally kills his supervisor, and he, his girlfriend, and his little sister flee to the Texas panhandle, where they find work harvesting wheat in the fields of a stoic farmer. A love triangle, a swarm of locusts, a hellish fire - Terrence Malick captures it all with dreamlike authenticity, creating a timeless American idyll that is also a gritty evocation of turn-of-the-century labor" (Criterion).

Back by popular demand!

Come join us at Madison Public Library Central on Saturday, September 16 for Volume 2 of Real Life Library.

Check out sessions between 10 am - 2 pm!

Real Life Library is based on the human libraries concept (humanlibrary.org). Some people are selected as “books” and trained to tell the story of their lived experience through a self-selected title.

Community members, "readers," are invited to the event where they can "check out" and "read" the “books” they are interested in, one "book" and a few "readers" engaging in an intimate group story-telling/listening session in the Reading Room.

Outside of the event, the story of each of the books will be video recorded. Thus, each event creates a digital volume of books and a diverse digital library that is later accessible to a far wider audience.

Central Library, Meeting Room 302
09/20/2017
7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Join in the discussion of UW-Madison’s 2017 Go Big Read Book, “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis” by J.D. Vance. Join us for discussion and dessert!

This New York Times bestseller is personal reflection on upward mobility in America seen through the lens of a white, working-class family in the Midwest. Author J.D. Vance grew up in the Rust Belt city of Middletown, Ohio, and the Appalachian town of Jackson, Kentucky. He enlisted in the Marine Corps after high school and served in Iraq, then went on to graduate from Ohio State University and Yale Law School. He has since become a principal at a leading Silicon Valley investment firm and a contributing writer to the National Review. Through his memoir, he shares experiences from his difficult childhood and how they have shaped his life. His story has resonated with many people and has sparked discussion about social, economic, and political issues nation-wide - and was chosen as the 2017 Go Big Read title to keep the conversation going. Visit http://www.madisonpubliclibrary.org/go-big-read to find more information, including other discussion dates, related events, and suggestions for further reading.

Madison Public Library and Madison Senior Center have joined together for our first ever intergenerational photo exhibit. We are looking for community members to attend a photo session and share their stories!

You must bring at least one person age 55+, along with anyone of a different generation(s) - related or not - to have your picture taken together. Groups are welcome too. Play it silly or serious. Be creative. Have fun!

Madison Public Library's Bubbler Artist-in-Residence, Jennie Bastian, will take your photo on the third floor of the Central Library during photo sessions on the following dates:

Saturday, August 26: 10 am - 2 pm
Thursday, September 28: 4-8 pm

Additionally, local author Pam Phillips Olson will be available to capture your stories if you'd like to have that included with your photo.

The photos will be displayed throughout the month of December 2017 at the Central Library and the Madison Senior Center, with a welcome reception to kick it off. Date, time, and location(s) to be announced.

Please call the Senior Center at 266-6581 to sign up for a photo session. Walk-ins are welcome too, but those with a reservation are guaranteed submission.

The Bubbler is partially funded by a National Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Funding for the Artist-in-Residence is provided by the Friends of the Madison Public Library. Additional funding for the Who Matters project is generously provided by a grant from the Madison Public Library Foundation.

Everything You Wanted to Know about Indians But Were Afraid to Ask

Everything You Wanted to Know about Indians But Were Afraid to Ask

Central Library, Meeting Rooms 301 & 302
09/30/2017
2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

American Indian nations and tribal communities in Wisconsin are a big part of the state's history. More importantly, they are a part of society today. We want to explore beyond each of their heritages to what our neighbors' lives are like, how we live and work side by side without really knowing who each other is in our communities.

At this event, author Anton Treuer will speak about his book, Everything You Wanted to Know about Indians but Were Afraid to Ask. He will also talk about his work as a professor and an Ojibwe tribal member.

For more information and other events in the series, visit http://www.beyondthepage.info/get-know-our-neighbors-wisconsins-tribal-n...
