First Friday Flicks - BRAD'S STATUS

First Friday Flicks - BRAD'S STATUS

Pinney Library
01/05/2018
6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

A father takes his son to tour colleges on the East Coast and meets up with an old friend who makes him feel inferior about his life's choices. (2017|102mins)
IMDb entry: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5884230/

"A marvelous dissection of a midlife crisis that’s far more self-aware than its protagonist, Brad’s Status features one of Ben Stiller’s richest and most bittersweet performances as a husband and father whose considerable obstacle to happiness is himself. Writer-director Mike White has crafted a painfully funny and surprisingly moving character piece, but what’s most remarkable is how he and his star empathize with Brad’s feelings of inferiority while, at the same time, pinpointing the arrogance, privilege and callousness that often factor into such soul-searching.”
-Tim Grierson, screendaily.com

Seating is first come, first served with space for 50 attendees. Doors open 1/2 hour before the film start time. Light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Pinney Library. This film is rated R by the MPAA. Children under 17 must be accompanied by an adult.

Hawthorne Library
01/05/2018
7:00 pm - 8:45 pm

Miss Kobayashi lives a normal life until she befriends a dragon named Tohru. The two end up living together and make a unique arrangement: Tohru serves as Kobayashi’s very own live-in maid! In the human form of a cute girl, she starts working as a maid dragon. She takes care of usual things like cleaning the house and cooking, but doing typical human things can still be a challenge for a dragon!

The Hawthorne Anime Club was created to give people a place to gather, watch, and talk about Japanese animation. Each meeting will include screenings of everything from classic titles to new releases. The club is aimed primarily at teens and adults. Films are shown in Japanese with English subtitles. Refreshments served at each meeting.

Call ahead to reserve your spot! People under age 16 who are interested in attending are required to have a parent present or to have a signed parental permission slip.

As she moves around the country with her family, she faces poverty, confusion, near homelessness and bullying by classmates who do not understand her circumstances. However, Jeanette's father always tries to inspire hope for the future in his children, even though he is largely responsible for the upheaval and uncertainty in their lives. And Jeanette holds those dreams for the future close, through good times and bad.

Hawthorne Library
01/25/2018
6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us for Hawthorne Library's monthly book club, The Salad Days! This group is tailored to (but by no means limited to!) readers of the millennial generation looking to explore books and popular culture. We meet the fourth Thursday of each month at The Daisy Cafe and Cupcakery (2827 Atwood Ave). You can pick up books at Hawthorne Library.

~1984 by George Orwell~

In George Orwell's 1984, Winston Smith wrestles with oppression in Oceania, a place where the Party scrutinizes human actions with ever-watchful Big Brother. Defying a ban on individuality, Winston dares to express his thoughts in a diary and pursues a relationship with Julia. These criminal deeds bring Winston into the eye of the opposition, who then must reform the nonconformist. George Orwell's 1984 introduced the watchwords for life without freedom: BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU.

Starting Your Memoir

Starting Your Memoir

Meeting Room 115, Goodman South Madison Library
01/30/2018
6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The stories of our lives connect generations and communities. That’s a priceless gift, one anyone can create, with guidance.

In this workshop for beginning writers, we will explore different aspects of writing a memoir. Whether you want to share your own life experiences or pass on your family’s stories, this class will help you get started. We’ll spend six sessions remembering and writing together. You'll learn to structure your stories, convey the essence of places and events, and deal ethically with writing about living people.

For each class meeting, students write a few pages on their life experiences. I suggest topics but encourage participants to write on whatever motivates them. Each class meeting includes time to share writing in a supportive environment. To enhance small-group interaction, enrollment is limited to 15. Attendees should bring paper and pen/pencils for in-class exercises. Participants should commit to attending all sessions if possible.

"I truly enjoyed this class and I think you are a phenomenal teacher. You created a welcoming and opening environment and it was a joy to participate. You have given me tools I will use for the rest of my life as a writer." - Hayley S.
